Labor Day was yesterday and I would like to know if the swimming area is open for swimmers.
Also, I would like to complain that during the Summer swimming in the lake after 6:00 pm is prohibited due to life guards end of shift for the day. Why isn't there a "swim at your own risk" sign or something during the Summer. The sun goes down about 9:00 pm and they practically throw people out of the water by 6:00 pm. The State Park should adopt a more libertarian view, thank you, or are we in a Police State now?

Re: Colgate Lake (Hunter, New York), Hunter, New York 12442 Greene County, Photos by Carabs

Will be seeing Colgate Lake for the first time next weekend. To my knowledge, the only time there will be a fee is when their is an event. Other then that the village is open for walking. You just need to park outside the main gate and walk in.

Though I am a biker and think get a bad rap, there is no biking allwoed in Waterloo village. The same goes for Allaire Village or other historic towns. I beleive the primary reason for that is because most of these groups are hikers, and simply to not like bikes. If i can spin around the woods on a singletrack with no ability to see aorund a turn 15 feet in front of me, why can't I peddle through Waterloo where the roads are 20 feet wide? So i am thinking the person collecting at the time may have just been annoyed at you being a biker. That is just a guess, I do not actually know if that is true of course. But i will try to contact some people and see what the actual fees are.

Re: Waterloo Village, 525 Waterloo Road Stanhope, NJ 07874, Photos by Carabs

I'd like to know admission fee. Last time i was there i was riding my bicycle and they wanted admission payment for just riding my bike thru the street and out the other end. I thought this was unreasonable. I didn't go in. they shouldn't charge for just walking through the grounds. Pennsbury Manor doesn't, neither do many other places. I've been looking at websites trying to find admission fee but cannot find anything. Are we to assume there is no fee?

Re: Winding River Park, Route 37 & Hospital Road Toms River, New Jersey 08753 Ocean County, Photos by Carabs

Winding River Park in Toms River used to be a very nice place to go and get away from it all and have some peace, but it is no longer that way. About 2 months ago I went there after work to just sit in my car and relax. I decided to put my seat back and doze off for a little while. When I woke up about 30 minutes later, and I looked out of my side window and I could not believe what I was actually seeing. There was a man about 62 years old and he had his pants and underwear down around his ankles and he was taking a dump in the woods. I found this to be completely disgusting and I yelled out the window to him and said, "Please don't do that here and go home and do your personal business". His reply to me was F**K Y** and mind your business as he was pulling up his pants.Again, I was totally shocked in what I was seeing with this man going to the bathroom in the woods there and then I thought to myself, is this how low society is today that they lower there pants and go to the bathroom outside wherever they want. I stopped going there for a couple of months since that event. Well, I decided to give it another try a few months later as I have always enjoyed going therre and I was not going to let one idiot ruin everything. I decided to go there in the morning as it was a gorgeous day and I parked and started to relax and the next minute there were 2 Toms River Police cars surrounding my car. The 2 officers got out of the car one starting to start asking me all kinds of questions and the other one stood in the background trying to look like a tough guy because he had a gun and a badge. Well, I start going thru this interrogation with this woman Police officer and she is asking me all types of questions for no reason at all. At one point I stopped her and I asked "What is this all about and why are you detaining me as I have the legal right to know....!" She gave me some limp story they were part of Homeland Security and their Chief ordered them to go to this park and do all this ridiculous questioning. I just listened any knew everything that was being said was no only a lie, but a big white lie. Me thinking I was the only one experiencing this, I was wrong as every single car that was in there, they were doing the exact same thing to everyone. It really pissed me off to the point I will never ever go to Winding River Park ever again as long as I live. Good Luck...

Re: Waterloo Village, 525 Waterloo Road Stanhope, NJ 07874, Photos by Carabs

Hello,

We used to go here when I was a kid a good bit. Back in the early 2000s it was closed, and was only opened for special events. I know they continue to have special events there, b ut i am not sure about just going there on a casual visit. You may want to do some searching for them online and see what you can find. But I certainly recommend heading there for a special event when the park is open.

-Jeff C

Re: Ocean County Park, Route 88 (Ocean Ave.) Lakewood, New Jersey 08701 Ocean County, Photos by Carabs

Hello Betty,

You would need to contact the park to find this out. I do so much miss living up there, but my grandfather retired back in I believe it was 1986. He worked for the Kuser Family who actually owned the mountain. This particular piece of property was where my mother, her 3 sisters and 1 brother lived most of their lives. My Grandparents were Raymond and Evelyn Burd together they had a total of 6 children, 8 grandchildren and to many great grandchildren to list. All of the grandchildren had the distinct privledge of spending alot of time up here, I was the one who got to spend more time than the others. I too loved that pond and nothing felt better on a hot summer day than to swim in it. I have many memories of also sitting on the dock of the spring house with my grandfather or my Uncle fishing for sunnys or floating in a canoe. My grandmother and I would often sit on the porch and watch the fish jump or watch the birds. That pond played host to many fishing "tournements" for the Mercer county ARC program.
To the right of the spring house there was a large weeping willow tree, that is where our German Sheppard Theresa lived. Between the two barns was where our beagles were housed, each with their own dog house, all of them were named after peanuts characters.
The original part of the house is that which has the wrap around porch. the back part of the house was added in the mid to late 60's. The last time i was at the house the back part was starting to collapse, funny how something built in the 60's is falling apart faster than something build almost 200 years ago. i would love to be able to get myself inside and get a few pictures of the old girl. My dream always was to be able to recreate this house.
Behind the house in the field was another pasture that had a pretty decent hill, that is where we did our sledding. The little "house" You refered to was actually not really part of our home. that was the hunting clubs meeting house. The kusers would host all kinds of hunts up on the mountain. Mostly fox hunts. i still remember all the "rich" people riding their horses wearing their bright red coats.
My grandmother has a beautiful rock garden on the hill between the club house and our house. But that too is gone. She had planted that garden and filled it with a different flower for each of her grandchildren. Mine was the black iris. i have gone up there many times in the spring hoping that just one or two of them would come up and I could take them home with me. The large rocks at the side of the driveway are where my cousin jumped off and broke His arm.
i could go on and on about what I still refer to as my home. I am very sad about the decay of the property, but no one had lived there for a very long time. I think the last caretaker moved out in the very early 90's. My grandparents moved off the property because of their advanced age and failing health. Part of the problem with staying was the Trap Rock Quary. their blasting away at the mountain was destroying the well. when Mrs. Kuser decided to sell there was a bidding war between the county and a housing developer. Thankfully the County won. I do not blame the county of the slow demise of the property too many years had passed with no maintence. My understanding is that when the upper barn fell. the large beams were preserved and sent to another state to be used in a barn/home restoration. so a part of the old girl lives on. I am however, very happy that this place was kept as a natural setting and not turned into more soccer and baseball fields and they are doing everything to preserve the main house that overlooks the river. I would love to share more with You.I am currently in the process of going thru some old family photos and am getting read to scan them so I can post them online. Feel free to contact me at fanic_that19030@yahoo.com or on facebook @ Lisa Stewart-Constant (there you can find some of the pictures I took of the old farm and some descriptions)

Re: Carabs Photos | Location: Baldpate Mountain | 080127_081-baldpate-nj.jpg

Hi!
Our hiking group came across this farm today while hiking at Baldplate Mtn. We were all curious about the history of the charming place and the people who lived there and why it is now is such disrepair. We just loved having lunch in such a peaceful, pleasant setting. I, myself loved the pond. I also loved the small house at the top of the hill that had a small patio in front of it. Any history you can share about this lovely place would be appreciated. The men in our group were fascinated of what's left of the elevator in the barn. We're part of the Ocean County Parks Department hiking group and would love to share anything you'd like to tell us with our group.......many of us are history and genealogy buffs and appreciate lovely places such as your grandparents farm.
Thank you,
Barbara

Re: Challenging hiking and biking, along with rustic camping, can be found at Round Valley Recreation Area.

This place is simply awesome dude.
